A secret service vehicle was hit during a fiery three-vehicle crash July 30 that damaged a Lewes apartment building off Route 9.
The crash happened at 2:12 p.m. at the intersection of Route 9 and Old Vine Boulevard when a Ford Transit van was heading westbound on Route 9 approaching Old Vine Boulevard, and failed to slow down at a red light, police said.
The van, driven by a Milton man, 41, crashed into the rear passenger side of a Chevrolet Silverado, police said, which caused the Silverado to enter the eastbound lane of Route 9 where the driver’s side hit the driver’s side of a Dodge Durango. The Dodge Durango was a secret service vehicle, police said.
After striking the truck, police said, the van drove off the road, coming to a stop and catching on fire next to a Vineyards of Nassau apartment building. The fire damaged the building, police said, but no one in the building was injured.
The driver of the Silverado, a Georgetown man, 68, the Milton driver, and the Durango driver, a 42-year-old Pennsylvania man, were all taken to an area hospital with nonlife-threatening injuries.
Police said the Milton man was cited with inattentive driving.
The state fire marshal is investigating damage to the building and property.
