The Plantation Road project, which includes the new roundabout, has entered Phase 4, which includes drainage improvements, adding sidewalk and widening the east side of the road. This work will require intermittent lane closures and be completed by the end of the year.
Phase 5 will include a shared-use path on the east side of the road from the Lowe’s entrance to the Route 9 intersection. The phase will also include final road paving of the entire project area in spring 2025, with nighttime lane closures expected.
Phase 1, which included the new roundabout connecting Plantation Road, Beaver Dam Road and Route 9 with a new access road from southbound Route 1, started in fall 2022.
Some work remains to be completed on the roundabout including new signage, completion of a perimeter pedestrian/bike path, removal of the large dirt mound and final paving.
According to the Delaware Department of Transportation website, this area was identified as a high priority by Sussex County Council due to high development growth in the corridor over the last several years. The purpose is to preserve mobility for local residents and businesses while providing roadway improvements along Plantation Road to reduce congestion, improve safety, and accommodate anticipated growth in local and seasonal traffic.
