After years of working for others, Jayna Stracci and Cathie Gilchrist have taken over ownership of the longtime barbershop location near the Angola area west of Lewes, which will now be known as The Barbershop at Peddler’s Village. The two women officially bought the business Dec. 3.

The business is back to being a full-service barbershop and welcoming back customers who might have left, said Stracci.

“The community needs it, and so far they’re happy to know we’re still here,” said Stracci.

Both women have been working at the barbershop for over a year. They said they jumped at the chance to keep the business going when given the opportunity by the landlord.

The barbershop was closed for a month to allow Stracci and Gilchrist to paint and replace old equipment. “This is all our stuff, and everything is all brand-new,” said Stracci.

“There had been talk about us moving out to Route 1, but it wouldn’t work for the shop’s customers,” said Gilchrist. The Angola area is still close to the beach, and the population is growing, so there’s a need for a good barbershop, she said.

Both Stracci, originally from New York, and Gilchrist, originally from Maryland, have been cutting hair for decades. They said they’ve always worked at traditional barbershops and are determined to keep that going at their new business.

Both women are licensed cosmetologists, and they offer haircuts for men, women and children. The Barbershop at Peddler’s Village is walk-ins only.

“We really want to keep it that way because the customers like it,” said Gilchrist.

For now, the shop is open from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Tuesday through Friday. Beginning in February, when their other barber returns, it will also be open on Saturdays.
