A Smyrna man faces charges after police say he stole items May 13 from the Lowe’s home improvement store near Lewes.
Police were called to the store on Plantation Road at 7:21 p.m. for a report of shoplifting, and were told a man stole items and left on foot. Store employees gave a description of the suspect, and troopers found Augustine Haymond, 44, at the bus stop near the store and arrested him.
Police said they searched Haymond and found stolen merchandise, a small amount of methamphetamine, and drug paraphernalia. Through further investigation, police said, troopers learned that Haymond had stolen the merchandise on display by cutting the security cable. Police said Haymond was also wanted for shoplifting in a similar manner from Lowe’s on Hessler Boulevard in New Castle.
Haymond was taken to Troop 7 and charged with two counts of possession of shoplifters tools, three counts of non-compliance with conditions of bond, theft – organized retail crime, shoplifting under $1,500, second-degree criminal trespass and other charges. He was arraigned by Justice of the Peace Court 7 and released on $11,500 unsecured bond.
