CAMP Rehoboth will present Making the Cut, an exhibition featuring artwork by members of the Delaware White-line Woodcut Guild, from Saturday, June 29 to Wednesday, July 31, at 37 Baltimore Ave., Rehoboth Beach.

A reception will be held from 5 to 7 p.m., Friday, July 12, offering a unique opportunity to meet the artists, learn about the process and see a live demonstration.

This exhibition showcases the revival of the white-line woodcut technique by a talented group of local artists. This distinctive art form, a blend of woodcarving and watercolor painting, has historic roots tied to the Rehoboth Art League and originated in Provincetown, Mass., in 1916.

The white-line woodcut technique involves carving an image onto a wooden block, outlining areas, and applying watercolor paint. A traditional Japanese print paper is then laid over the block and rubbed to transfer the image. Successive layers of paint enhance the colors and textures, resulting in each print being a unique masterpiece, enriched by the wood grain and paper texture.

Fred Dylla, a Lewes artist and founder of the guild, learned the white-line woodcut techniques from Bill Evaul, an artist from Provincetown, Mass., who has promoted this art form through workshops and exhibitions across the Northeast for over 40 years. Dylla has since shared his expertise with guild members, fostering a community passionate about this art form.

The Making the Cut exhibition features original prints by Dylla, Evaul, Lisa Bain, Anne Barney, Michele Bartley, Robert Cumming, Debra Dircks, Jann Haynes Gilmore, Mark Harris, Arlene Matzkin, Lindley McGrew, Lorraine Quinn, Sherry Sherwood, Leslie Snowdon-Jones and Lori Swift.
