A Lincoln man, 23, faces gun charges after he fled police when exiting the Jefferson Apartments in Lewes.

Police monitoring the complex at 8:30 p.m., Sept. 15, saw a white Mazda exit, and they stopped the car on Route 1 south of Dartmouth Drive, said Lewes Police Chief Thomas Spell.

While talking to the driver, he said, the passenger, Jefferson Ramirez-Rodriguez, got out of the car and ran into a wooded area. Officers chased him and saw him remove a black handgun from his waistband, Spell said.

After losing sight of Ramirez-Rodriguez, Lewes police asked for help from Delaware State Police, and officers established a perimeter. A helicopter from the Maryland State Police also responded. Ramirez-Rodriguez was taken into custody with the help of nighttime heat-seeking technology, Spell said. Officers were able to locate a Glock semi-automatic handgun and two loaded magazines in the area.

Ramirez-Rodriquez was arrested and charged with carrying a concealed deadly weapon, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, possession of a firearm by a person prohibited, tampering with physical evidence and resisting arrest. He was committed to Sussex Correction Institute in default of $30,500 bail.
