Two new officers raised their right paws and were sworn in to the Dewey Beach Police Department at a special ceremony that was delayed momentarily when nature called.

After the conclusion of that business, Police Chief Constance Speake introduced K-9 Smoke, a Belgian Malinois, to town commissioners and the public at the Dec. 15 town council meeting.

Smoke is trained to detect illegal narcotics, track people or locate articles; search buildings for narcotics or people; and apprehend fleeing or violent subjects, Speake said. Smoke worked his first shift with his partner and handler Cpl. Carl Kurten Nov. 3.

“There is no end to his energy when playing with his favorite toy,” Speake said. “And he absolutely loves Carl.”

Next, Speake introduced Jasper, a German shepherd purebred rescue, who is trained in narcotics detection and tracking. His favorite treat is cheese, Speake said, and he likes to play ball and tug of war. Jasper worked his first shift with handler/partner PFC Dylan Ebke Nov. 13.

“He is very friendly and very social,” Speake said. “He gives hugs, he gives kisses, when he first meets you.”
