Peach grower Henry Bennett and pastry chef Dru Tevis teamed up for the sixth time July 20, as the featured duo presented another demonstration at the Historic Lewes Farmers Market.
Tevis’ dessert was a rice pudding peach parfait with a blueberry sauce using fruit from Bennett Orchards, which Tevis has featured for years in his creative desserts.
Tevis is now corporate pastry chef for Southern Delaware Brewing Co., which includes Thompson Island Brewery in Rehoboth Beach and Ocean View Brewing. SDBC is a company within SoDel Concepts.
Bennett, who manages Bennett Orchards with his brother James “Hail” Bennett, is carrying on a tradition of growing peaches that started in 1978. The Bennetts grow 16 varieties of peaches, one variety of nectarines and have 10 acres of blueberries. Other family members, Henry and Carrie, are also involved in the operation of the farm.
They sell their peaches at nine farmers markets and offer pick-your-own and pre-picked peaches at the orchards at 31442 Peach Tree Lane, Frankford, off Route 20. Go to bennettorchards.com for information on pick-your-own dates.
Bennett said this year’s crop is one of the best in several years.
