Paris isn’t the only place where fierce Olympic competition is taking place. Last week, some 200 lifeguards representing a dozen beach patrols from Sussex County and Ocean City, Maryland, competed in the 47th annual Rehoboth Beach Patrol Lifeguard Olympics. And lifeguards from Delaware State Parks dominated, claiming the gold and bragging rights.

Lifeguards competed in 10 events July 25 on Rehoboth Beach. Events included runs and swims as well as paddle rescue, iron man medley, beach flags, and tug-of-war.

Rehoboth Beach Patrol’s Lt. Bryan Bowles notes of this year’s event: “The total team effort demonstrated by all those competing was inspiring. And the competition was intense with a hard-fought win by Delaware State Parks.”

Following Delaware State Parks, the top finishing beach patrols were:

  • Bethany Beach – second
  • Ocean City – third
  • Rehoboth Beach – fourth
  • Middlesex – fifth

Sponsors of this annual event include Anchorage Motel, Aqua Bar and Grill, Arena’s, Elite Physical Therapy, Good Man Home Improvements, Grotto Pizza, Logo Motive, Print Coast 2 Coast, Purple Parrot, Rehoboth Toy & Kite Company, The Starboard, and Surf Bagel.
