Harvey is seeking a full term on council after he was appointed in 2022 to fill the remaining year of John Collier’s term after Collier was elected mayor.
A lifelong Milton resident, Harvey is a lifetime member of the Milton Fire Department where he serves as part of the fire police. Harvey is retired after spending 22 years with the Cape Henlopen School District. He is the current chair of the town’s water committee and is the father of police Chief Derrick Harvey.
Harvey’s seat is one of two that could be contested in this year’s election; the other is held by Councilwoman Lee Revis-Plank. Citizens have until Tuesday, Jan. 2, to file as candidates.
Dewey Beach commissioners approved a $223,000 revenue-neutral budget amendment they stated was necessary due to increased expenses from hiring three new police officers and purchasing new uniforms for the department.
Commissioners also unanimously approved raising the town manager’s salary to $125,000, stating he has been underpaid in comparison to neighboring towns, several of which have posted their need for a town manager. The new three-year-plus contract includes 5% increases in 2026 and 2027. Town Manager Bill Zolper was hired in 2021 under a three-year contract with a starting annual salary of $95,000.
